Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Supervisor

As the Plant Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Supervisor, you will actively participate as a valued member of local team in providing leadership to the Health, Safety and Environment programs at the plant, within the defined World Class Manufacturing framework, in a manner consistent with the Principles of Conduct and Action of culture. This hands-on leadership position entails active work in the areas of safety in the workplace, driving safe behaviors, accident prevention, and minimizing environmental wastes to assure compliance with all local, state, and federal occupational health, safety and environmental laws, regulations, and guidelines, as well as with corporate health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.

ROLE SUMMARY

  • Reporting to the Plant Manager, the EHS Supervisor plans, directs, and implements facility safety and environmental programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. This position is responsible for leading all aspects of the facility compliance efforts with Federal, State and local EHS regulations, as well as all facility safety and environmental programs and policies. In addition, this position is responsible to develop, maintain, and/or execute facility and company strategic goals, including the successful completion of the annual EHS Plan. 
  • This hands-on position will provide direction and leadership to all managers, supervisors, and employees in matters dealing with EHS related concerns. This position is expected to contribute to the achievement of world class status by eliminating occupational injuries/illnesses, property damage and environmental impacts. This position will specifically focus on improving and safeguarding the health and safety of all employees, ensuring compliance, and eventually leading World Class Manufacturing (WCM) environmental and safety pillar activities and In addition, the EHS Supervisor will upgrade or develop all aspects of the training process and programs to ensure and increase effectiveness.  The incumbent will participate with the management team in promoting positive employee relations, improved communication systems and policies, and support the overall growth and direction of the facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - SAFETY - 60%

  • WCM Safety Pillar Leader once launched.
  • Direct the site safety program, including occupational safety, contractor safety, industrial hygiene, process safety, and management systems.
  • Develop and implement Safety Risk reduction project plans based on Risk Scoring
  • Support incident investigation activities, root cause analysis, corrective action identification and closure.
  • Conduct regular safety audits of all departments including the inspection of facilities, worksites, equipment, work practices, and safety devices to ensure compliance with required workplace safety standards, regulations, and company policy: reports findings to department and recommends changes to establish safe work conditions.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the company's injury prevention programs- directing and coordinating the participation of departments within the program.
  • Facilitate hazard identification & risk assessment within each department and assist in coordination of and closure and/or corrective actions.
  • Develop, implement, and manage training of employees on safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable internal and external EHS regulations.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - ENVIRONMENTAL - 5%

  • Direct & oversee the site environmental management processes, including management of chemicals, air, hazardous and solid waste, wastewater, storm water, and pollution prevention.
  • Work to provide vision and roadmap for site to achieve Saint Gobain 2030 and 2050 goals.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable internal and external EHS regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - HEALTH - 5%

  • Oversee and maintain SDS program.
  • Review new chemicals and ensures appropriate controls are established prior to introduction into the workplace.
  • Direct ergonomic assessments and provide technical guidance to production teams to minimize risks with material handling, repetitive motion and workstation design.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES - 30%

  • Perform data entry into corporate EHS databases.
  • Analyze EHS data to populate and use WCM Safety, Environmental and Health Pillar Boards to define, implement and deliver EHS objectives.
  • Promote, develop and train behavioral EHS initiatives to drive to an autonomous EHS culture.
  • Maintain EHS training program to ensure proper training is provided for all Safety Standards.
  • Comply with all EHS standards, assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforce plant rules and safety regulations, consistent with the corporate Values and Attitudes
  • May assist with product development, capital projects, process implementation and commissioning, and regulatory affairs.
  • Lead and participate in EHS inspections, self-assessments, and audits.
  • Keep informed regarding industry and government standards and specifications.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Industrial Relations or any other relevant field of study; or Technical College Degree in Environment, Hygiene and Work Safety combined with significant related experience.
  • Master's degree in environmental science or other derived branches, preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5 years of safety, environmental, engineering or related experience in a manufacturing environment; or more than 2 years EHS technician related experience in environmental, health and safety in government, industry, or higher education.
  • Participative, hands-on, industrial, practical leader in a union industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of WCM Environmental and Safety Pillars, preferred.

Practical/Technical Knowledge

  • Ability to develop and deliver EHS training material for various personnel – Required.
  • Ample knowledge about chemicals, environmental science, and human health – Required.

Leadership         

  • Must be a hands-on leader who leads by example and values time invested on shop floor working in and on the Process.           
  • Must use effective coaching techniques to develop a culture of employee engagement.

Communicating and Influencing Skills

  • Demonstrable personal attributes to effectively communicate and influence all levels of employees and leadership.
  • Outstanding influencing and negotiation skills.          

Problem Solving

  • Ability of using various scientific rules and methods to solve problems coupled with the ability to detect and solve problems effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability using WCM Focused Improvement problem solving methods.

Licenses and Certifications

  • OSHA 10 hour or 30-hour Certification - Required
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER - Preferred

Special Instructions or Work Requirements 

  • Pushing/Pulling/Lifting Requirements: Typical Weightlifting Requirement 40 lbs.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • 25% for meetings and vendor site testing

Valid Driver's License Required

  • Reason for Drivers License: To operate company vehicle and rental cars when traveling.
